Activated charcoal works by absorbing impurities, toxins, dirt and oil. Oral activated charcoal is often used in medicine. The use of activated charcoal in medicine dates back to over 100 years ago to treat poisoned patients and in drug overdoses.Activated charcoal contains highly porous carbon with oxygen, it is also referred to as activated carbon. The carbon on the surface has a negative charge (-) which binds to impurities that are polar, non-polar and substances with positive charges (+).Negative attracts positive hence the carbon draws out the toxins by binding to them. The porous nature of the carbon also locks in toxins and impurities.
